On June 13th, the Tree Team visited Mountain Gateway Community College and talked with Professor Scott Reigel who teaches about forestry. He spoke about various topics in both forestry and career paths. Mr. Reigel shared with us the many different types of forests: natural, artificial, and urban. He also let us know that forestry is currently a very in-demand career. Foresters have a vital role in maintaining healthy communities and ecosystems as well as fighting climate change, and they do this by managing and sustaining forests. He also shared some common misunderstandings about forestry. For instance, many people think that the main goal of forestry is to plant trees. In reality, Mr. Reigel explained that something is often going wrong with maintaining forests if we have to plant more trees.
While we were at Mountain Gateway, we also learned about the summer internships, the pros and cons of community college, and more. This experience with Mr. Reigel has helped me realize that we don't necessarily need to have certain credentials or talents to reach our goals and achieve things. He explained how much character matters to teachers and to employers, and how approaching experiences with a positive attitude is important.
