On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 19th, three members of the Tree Team walked across the street from our base at the Ramsey Center to interview Greg Johnson, the owner of a local restaurant called Straws.
Straws is a local hangout spot for teens and adults, and Mr. Johnson pointed out that the business is coming up on its two year anniversary. This community conversation was different from others that we had since – being on a busy section of Magnolia Avenue – there are no green spaces on the Straws property where Mr. Johnson could plant trees. However, he told us that he would love to use Straws as a place to display fliers and brochures for customers to learn more about the BV Cool Trees project. Overall, Mr. Johnson was very supportive of the program.
This experience helped us learn a few new things that we had not encountered before. In particular, the conversation showed us that community members do not need to have property for tree-planting in order to be involved with BV Cool Trees. Through their support and publicity, they can still have a very positive and helpful impact on the project and its goals.
Talking with Mr. Johnson also inspired us to brainstorm about other ways that organizations and business can support BV Cool Trees outside of tree-planting: They could build rooftop gardens, volunteer with tree-planting or tree maintenance, or even host game nights or other events to benefit BV Cool Trees. It was fun to realize that there are many ways people can be helpful as we build this important project.
