On the morning of Thursday, June 20th, three members of the Tree Team walked to Buena Vista's Stone Church of the Brethren to speak with Pastor Galen Combs. First, we spoke with Pastor Combs about BV Cool Trees, our internship as part of the Tree Team, and the goals we wish to reach. We also described that, as part of BV Cool Trees, we want to plant trees on properties around town, including businesses, houses, organizations, and churches.
Pastor Combs seemed interested in our conversation, and he said that Stone Church of the Brethren would be interested in having small flowering trees planted in certain areas of the church's property. He is also willing to display our BV Cool Trees brochures and fliers as advertising in the church. Finally, Pastor Combs said that the church has a youth group that might be able to assist BV Cool Trees as volunteers for tree planting, maintenance, and other activities.
It was exciting to know that BV Cool Trees might be able to have an impact on this part of town, and it was great to hear that Pastor Combs is enthusiastic about the project overall.
In addition, I learned a fun local fact while talking to Pastor Combs. The church owns Penny Park and leased it to Buena Vista for just a penny. That is how the park got its name! These community conversations have been helpful not just to gather information for BV Cool Trees, but to learn more about the place where we live.
