On the morning of Tuesday, June 18th, the Tree Team had the opportunity to meet with a team from the US Forest Service at their Natural Bridge Office. They told us what their jobs are and what type of work each of them does each day. They also explained that the US Forest Service is a federal agency. Lauren Stull is a District Ranger, meaning she is the leader of that branch of the Forest Service. Other people that work at their office have different jobs. Jacob is the District Timber Ranger, and he harvests trees properly to have a positive effect on the forest. In fact, cutting down some trees can reduce fires if it's done right. Patricia is a biological wildlife scientist. She tracks and studies wildlife like fish and eels to understand how their populations might be affected by forest health. She also helps to protect a salamander species that only lives in a certain area of Virginia. Katie is a recreation technician and she helps to educate people who want to come to the national forest and how to protect it. Lastly, Bret is the fire manger. He helps stop wildfires, and also does prescribed fires to help clear out the underbrush and prevent worse wildfires. All of their jobs are very important. They help take care of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest which is 193 million acres in size. Everyone owns the national forest and these people are kind enough to help take care of it and make sure it's enjoyable to everyone.
