On the morning of Thursday, June 20th, the BV Tree Team split into two groups of three to embark on two community conversations. My group went to speak to Harold Kidd across the street from the BV Baptist Church. Mr. Kidd is the building and grounds manager of BV Baptist, and he was also Buena Vista's mayor at several points in his life. In addition, he has served on the Buena Vista school board, and city council, and the City's planning commission.
Because he is so experienced with Buena Vista and with city government in general, Mr. Kidd came prepared with very specific ideas for the BV Baptist property. As a church, they use their yard for many activities, so they only want a few trees planted in that area. However, he did have an idea for where trees can go outside of that yard and what kind of trees he wants planted. He thought that smaller trees, like redbuds or dogwoods, would be best for all of those locations.
Mr. Kidd also had some ideas for BV Cool Trees in general. For instance, he believes that the City should hire a knowledgeable person – like a city arborist – who would be in charge of planning for and maintaining the hundreds of new trees. Through his years of experience, he had also learned about invasive or challenging tree species, and wanted to be sure that the City was not planning on using those for the BV Cool Trees project. Mr. Kidd was also interested in displaying BV Cool Trees brochures and fliers for the BV Baptist community to learn more about the project.
I found the whole conversation we had with Mr. Kidd to be very interesting, and it seemed that he was enthusiastic about the BV Cool Trees Project. I would say that this conversation was one of the best and most informative Community Conversations had by the Tree Team.
