On the afternoon of Thursday, June 13th, the Tree Team had the opportunity to meet with Elaina Skovira, the Buena Vista library branch manager. Our group informed her about the important tasks the Tree Team will be accomplishing, including engaging with the community, sharing knowledge about trees, and building the tree nursery. Elaina is excited about BV Cool Trees, but we learned that the library does not own the land around its buildings. The Main Library is owned by the City of Buena Vista, and the Children’s Library is owned by the Methodist Church. Even though Ms. Skovira wasn't able to make decisions about trees near the libraries, this conversation gave us valuable information. We learned that not every organization has ownership of their property and therefore can’t immediately have an answer about planting trees on the property. However, the library is happy to have posters and flyers about the Cool Tree program, and we hope that others will be willing too. This positive experience has helped us with communication skills, getting the word out, and realizing that property is not always owned by those who we would expect. All of this knowledge will definitely give us an advantage the next time the Tree Team has an interview.
