From Monday, June 10th to Wednesday, June 12th, the BV Tree Team made a goal to transform an overgrown garden at Enderly Heights Elementary School into a functioning tree nursery. On the first day of the transformation, we started by removing weeds and the many pieces of cardboard along the paths. Both the cardboard and weeds were put in the composter to be used as soil later. We also had the opportunity to plant baby dogwood trees in pots, which will continue to grow in the nursery over the next few years.
On the second day, we got help from certified arborist Karen Stanley to add leaf mulch to the garden beds. We also cut and secured landscaping fabric onto the pathways, and then we covered it with wood mulch. The process continued on the third day until we ran out of mulch.
Each step of the process included some challenge and hard work in hot weather, but we started to see the nursery take shape. This nursery will help BV Cool Trees to grow and take care of baby trees before they are planted. During this process, we learned how important it is for trees to be cared for while they're young.
